Intense Pulsed Light
The IPL Photofacial - Changing Your Skin from the Inside Out
Sun damage beware! While UVA and UVB rays like to add years to your skin, an IPL Photofacial can take them off. Through the use of intense pulsed light, this treatment reduces spots, redness, broken veins and capillaries and improves uneven tone and texture. There is little to no downtime and minimal discomfort from an IPL treatment. The redness-reducing ability of IPL has gained much acclaim as a treatment for rosacea too, and extra benefits also include increased collagen production and decreased pore size. In addition to the Photofacial, IPL can be used successfully on any part of the body where sun damage has left its mark. It’s a popular treatment for the chest, hands, legs and other areas.
Performed in a series, IPL Photofacials lead to smooth, even skin, and that equals beautiful, youthful looking skin.
How does IPL work?
IPL is an intense pulsed light laser that targets redness causing blood vessels and the melanin that makes up sun and age spots. Without breaking the skin, the laser’s light goes beneath the surface to damage the blood vessels and melanin, which are then naturally absorbed by the body.
Can I use IPL technology to improve my skin’s appearance on other parts of my body?
IPL treatments can be used anywhere you have sun damaged skin, age spots, redness or broken capillaries. In addition to the face, patients benefit from using IPL to renew the skin on the chest (décolletage), hands, legs, arms and back. Imagine getting rid of age spots everywhere. Shorts and tank tops will be back in season!
Does an IPL Photofacial hurt?
IPL is a non-invasive treatment, and discomfort is kept to a minimum. Patients have described a feeling similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Treatments last about an hour as various affected areas are targeted. During a treatment, a gel is applied to the skin, which is treated with the light. Afterwards, the gel is cleaned off and sunscreen is applied.
Is there any downtime with an IPL treatment?
You will have no real downtime from an IPL treatment other than possibly the look and sensation of a slight sunburn. There might be redness on areas treated for redness, and brown spots usually get darker in the 24 hours following the treatment and then just gently flake off. Any and all of these symptoms will clear up within about a week. However, you can wear makeup right away following treatment, and you will not feel any discomfort.
How do I prepare for my IPL treatment visit?
The most important way you can prepare for an IPL treatment is to stay out of the sun for a week prior to your visit. Always wear sunscreen, and you will need to stay out of the sun for a week following treatment as well.
How many treatments will I need?
IPL treatments are performed in a series spaced about a month apart. You will need three to five treatments depending on the level of discoloration you would like to improve. Most people will see a significant improvement after a couple treatments, but maximum results are achieved with a full series.
Is IPL a good treatment for rosacea redness?
IPL treatments have proven excellent for ameliorating the redness, flushing and bumps associated with rosacea. Because this is a treatment that works especially well on redness and broken capillaries, IPL precisely targets the issues faced by rosacea sufferers. Post-treatment, patients also notice improved pore size and fewer breakouts. With avoidance of rosacea- aggravating activities and sun exposure, the results of a series of IPL Photofacials can last for years.
What other treatments work well with IPL Photofacials?
While the IPL laser penetrates the skin to target melanin and capillaries, pairing a Photofacial with a skin resurfacing treatment like Fraxel provides an even more dramatic result. Like IPL, Fraxel is a laser treatment, but Fraxel goes deeper and removes old surface skin, causing your body to naturally produce new skin. Fraxel is ideal for removing brown spots, improving overall skin pigment and texture and reducing fine lines and wrinkles. These treatments can be used together in the same office visit and should also be performed in a series (of four) to achieve total skin renewal.
How should I maintain my results?
The best way to maintain the results of your IPL Photofacial or treatment to other areas of the body is to wear sunscreen every day and avoid sun exposure to those areas. Remember, IPL works to improve sun-damaged skin. Even when you remove existing sun or age spots, if you put your beautiful new skin in the sun without protection, you run the risk of developing new spots and damaging your skin again.
