What areas can be treated with laser hair removal?
Anyone who has struggled with shaving, waxing (or worse!) will be glad to know that IPL laser hair removal can be used to get rid of unwanted hair anywhere it grows. This means legs, bikinis, arms and underarms, the face, and basically any other hairy place, can become smooth year-round without another nick. Guys find that laser hair removal can provide an escape from the daily routine of beard shaving, and this treatment can even get rid of unwanted back hair – ok, is there ever actually “wanted” back hair? In fact, about the only hair that does not respond well to laser treatment is lighter colored hair like blond, white or gray.
Of course, the key to successful laser hair removal is to find a licensed and experienced certified laser operator, even in states where certification is not required by law. You should also keep in mind that laser hair removal takes four to eight treatments because hair grows in a cycle, but not all hairs grow at the same rate. And since you can’t go in the sun before or after a laser hair removal treatment, the process is something best started in the fall.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Laser hair removal is a trouble-free treatment to get rid of unwanted hair on virtually any part of the body. During treatment, patients may feel a slight discomfort, which has been compared to the snapping of a rubber band, with each pulse of the light. Even this mild sensation can be reduced with the application of a topical numbing cream. After treatment, patients may see and feel a “mild sunburn,” but that will subside within a few hours.
By comparison to other hair removal methods, the short-term discomfort of laser hair removal seems like a pretty good bargain because it is a solution to unwanted hair. Patients who choose laser hair removal have decided to say good-bye to razors, tweezers, depilatories, waxing and other methods of hair removal, each of which causes its own type of discomfort on a regular basis. But what doesn’t hurt at all after the completion of laser hair removal is walking on the beach hair-free every day from now on.
Are laser treatments safe?
Do enough Internet searching, and you will find plenty of examples of laser treatments gone wrong, usually coupled with photos that might even show patients with burning or scarring. These messages are in direct contrast to the more positive stories about the amazing benefits of laser treatments, which can be used to resurface skin, remove unwanted hair and even get rid of fat without ever breaking the skin’s surface.
When it comes to laser treatments, or any other type of medical spa procedure, the experience and certification of the professional performing the treatment is just as important as the equipment itself. Lasers emit intense beams of light that are powerful enough to penetrate layers of skin, and they should only be operated by the appropriate professionals. Unfortunately, in some states including Florida, laser certification is not required by law. Unqualified practitioners sometimes offer laser treatments, which can lead to bad or unsafe results.
In the same way that a dental drill is perfectly safe in the hands of a dentist, laser treatments are safe when performed by licensed, certified laser operators. The training and experience of the professional performing the procedure is always critical. A conscientious, responsible medical or spa practice will require its staff to obtain laser certification to ensure only safe, effective treatments for its patients. Qualified, licensed professionals should be happy to show you their certification and discuss their level of experience with all patients.
Keep it safe by always choosing experience and professionalism over cost. Unless you would visit a discount dentist, don’t look for a discount laser treatment.
