Those who made the project possible say they wanted a place where veterans can come reflect, and where others can honor those who have or are currently serving.
The Armed Forces fountain is surrounded by names in memory and in honor of soldiers, in all military branches. An eagle is featured on top of the fountain. Veterans at the event stressed the importance of remembrance at the dedication ceremony, including Belleair's mayor.
"Honoring our veterans is very near and dear to my heart,” said Mayor Gary Katica. “As an air force Korean war veteran, serving my country was a highlight an honor and a duty. A duty that veterans from all branches and all wars do not take lightly."
Congressman David Jolly also spoke about honoring service-members.
"Veterans Day weekend is a particularly special day because we know we have men and women overseas still protecting us," said Jolly. "What the town of Belleair has done is ensure that every time somebody drives by this memorial, we can quietly pay tribute to the service of so many."
Those who visit the park will now have a place to sit and reflect. They’ll also be surrounded by fresh landscaping, flowering trees, and new lighting.
The project was a collaborative effort with the town’s parks and recreation department, and the Belleair Community Foundation. The foundation raised more than $300,000 in donations for the park.
