If you over-indulged during the holidays, you may find that your skin looks dull, dry, and a bit weathered. That’s why the new year is a good time to give your skin a fresh start. And with New Year’s resolutions quickly approaching, it’s the perfect time to establish positive routines that will help you look and feel your best.
If you need help getting started, here are our 4 top skin care tips for fresh skin:
1. Use a daily serum. A serum is a skincare product that contains high-quality ingredients that improve your skin’s performance. Serums can be used under your regular moisturizer on clean, dry skin. Different serums are formulated for different concerns and can help with a variety of skin issue, including:
- Skin brightening
- Collagen production
- Wrinkle reduction
- Free-radical damage
- Skin tone
- Skin softness
Serums that contain antioxidants, vitamin C, or retinol are a good place to start. However, these ingredients can break down and lose their potency if they aren’t packaged correctly. Look for products that are air-tight (either a pump or a tube, as opposed to a jar) and store them in a cool, dry, dark place.
2. Purchase a new sunscreen and wear it every day. You’ve heard it before, and we’re going to say it again: You should be wearing sunscreen every day. Even indirect sunlight can contribute to aging skin, which is why sunscreen is such an important part of your skincare routine.
If you already have a sunscreen, be sure to check the expiration date. If it’s expired, toss it out! Additionally, if your sunscreen has spent time in a hot car or out in the sun, it needs to be replaced. The active ingredients in sunscreen break down in hot temperatures, which means you get less UV protection.
3. Invest in anti-aging treatments. Over-the-counter skincare products can only do so much. To really target the deeper tissues of your skin, you’ll need to invest in some heavy-duty treatments like VIVACE™, chemical peels, or PRP therapy with microneedling. Our Tampa-area practice frequently performs these procedures to improve signs of aging at a deep level. Most procedures offer little downtime and minimal side effects so you don’t have to change your normal routine. And while these treatments come with a higher price tag up front, they offer long-lasting, dramatic improvements that keep your skin looking refreshed and rejuvenated for several months.
4. Update your moisturizer seasonally. Changes in the weather mean changes in your skin–and you’ll want to adapt your skincare routine accordingly. It’s a good idea to use a more emollient moisturizer in the chilly winter months because your skin is usually drier and flakier. In the summer, however, you may want to switch to a more lightweight, oil-free moisturizer when the air is damper.
